Flavia Laviosa: Creative Methodology in Foreign Language Teaching

 

This workshop includes: Teaching grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the four skills creatively; Creative approaches to teaching pronunciation; Putting life into course book exercises; Adapting activities and tasks creatively; Using the learner as a learning resource; Live listening, including story telling; Using music, songs, visuals and the fine arts, and movement.

Flavia Laviosa: Teaching with Limited Resources

This is a very practical workshop for foreign language instructors who have to use a course-book in their work, but believe that teaching does not have to depend on it. The trainer will illustrate the many advantages in teaching with fewer or no materials and provided an array of examples on how teachers can utilize the people in the group as their principal resource so that the input is not mediated, and the students are the main protagonists of the learning process.

 

Sara Laviosa, University of Bari, Italy: Cultural Translation for Language Learning

During this workshop participants will become familiar with the concept of holistic cultural translation and apply it in the L2 Italian classroom to hone translingual and transcultural competence. This is the envisioned goal of foreign language education in our plurilingual and pluricultural societies. Participants will first be introduced to the notion of conceptual metaphor, then, they will engage in the analysis of conceptual metaphors in an Italian poem. They will also translate the poem in English and compare and contrast their renderings with the rest of the class. The aim is to have a first-hand experience to translating cultural difference with a view to fostering cross-lingual and cross-cultural sensitivity.

 

Flavia Laviosa is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian Studies and the Cinema and Media Studies Program at Wellesley College. She holds a PhD in Foreign Language Education from SUNY Buffalo and is a certified ACTFL Italian OPI and WPT trainer and tester. She has extensive experience as foreign language educator in North America and Europe.
